A network of more than 172 kilometres

The network system is mapped
using a GIS application

The sewer system is approximately 172,680 metres long. All the water is conducted to the Guadalhorce wastewater treatment plant, in the municipality of Málaga, which is managed by the Empresa Municipal de Aguas de Málaga (EMASA). The system also includes four wastewater pumping plants managed by Aguas de Torremolinos in the municipality of Torremolinos.

The diameter of the network ranges from  63 mm to 1,500 mm in rainwater pipes, sewer pipes and combined sewer pipes. Pipes are mainly made of PVC.

There are 6,517 manholes. There are 4,543 gutter units distributed throughout the municipality of Torremolinos.

The whole network system is mapped and traced by GIS software, offering greater control for preventative and corrective network maintenance.

Activities carried out in the sewer system

  • Preventive inspection of the sewer network using pole-mounted camera equipment

    Inspection using a camera provides crucial information to plan sewer system maintenance in all aspects relating to dirtiness and the identification of points that require some kind of action.

  • Preventive, corrective maintenance of the sewer system

    The aim of preventive maintenance is to extract depositions and obstructions that prevent the correct functioning of the system and may cause bad smells. Once the problem has occurred, corrective cleaning or unblocking is carried out.

    Cleaning of gutters in the sewer system is a priority for Aguas de Torremolinos year round, which intensifies in the period prior to rains and the start of the water year on 1 October. To clean the gutters, many teams of operators are assigned to the task in morning or afternoon shifts, supervised by experts and with vehicles adapted for cleaning the grates and the branches of the gutters.

    Planning the cleaning of the sewer system (GALIA)

    GALIA is a tool for carrying out advanced management of the sewer system through digitalisation and analysis of the information gathered in the field using mobile devices.

    It can be used to plan the tasks through feedback algorithms with information on past and real maintenance needs.
